Solvent-based adhesives have a good wetting behavior and can be applied easily in different ways. Good bond strength is obtained rapidly after evaporation of the solvent. According to the adhesive basis, there is a range of performances available. Solvent-based adhesives are suited to a wide array of different materials such as metals, plastics, rubber, leather, cork, felt, wood, board, textiles, glass, ceramics and concrete (‘all-purpose adhesive’).
Most frequently, the adhesive is applied to both adherents, which are joined under pressure after evaporation of the solvent. If at least one material is porous, the adhesive can be applied to one substrate only (wet bonding). The adherents can also be first coated/dried and then later bonded after reactivation by a solvent or by heat.
