Folding Cartons

In the retail package sector, folding cartons are the most popular product. These are manufactured by bonding folded paperboard using plasticized polyvinyl acetate homopolymer based or ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymer-based dispersion adhesives (side-seam bonding), thereby converting flat sheets into boxes. Very often, the package material must be sales-promotional, and so the folding cartons need to be available in a wide variety of designs and with finished surfaces. From coating and lamination to premium printing and varnishing, all types of paper finishing modes are applied. These surface properties are crucial when selecting the correct adhesives for side-seam bonding. Historically, dispersion adhesives were applied by means of discs, but the newer machinery relies increasingly on the use of nozzles with electromagnetically controlled valves (Figure 8.24).
