VARIATIONS ON CONVENTIONAL EMULSION POLYMERISATION

In recent years the elimination of all volatile organic compounds (VOC) from coating formulations has been ideally sought but has proved extremely difficult in certain areas of high performance requirements.

In that quest, several variations to the standard method of emulsion manufacture have been introduced, in order to improve aspects of film formation, e. g.

• film block resistance

• early hardness

• gloss

• chemical resistance

• adhesion to low energy surfaces, e. g. plastics

• rheology control

• mar resistance

• reduction/emination of volatile organic components re coalescents.

The traditional methods of emulsion polymerisation had to be altered to satisfy these new demands, whilst retaining the traditional comonomers used. Some of the latest developments in emulsion polymerisation technology will now be considered.
