Core / Shell Polymers

Recent advances in emulsion polymerisation techniques have enabled the development of core /shell polymers, where each dispersed particle is comprised of an inner core of one polymer surrounded by a thin outer shell of another. In the case of a harder core with a softer shell, this would permit film formation to take place at lower temperatures without sacrificing ultimate film hardness. Minimum film forming temperatures as low as 1 °С can be achieved without the addition of a coalescing solvent, thereby enabling the formulator to produce good quality, low-odour, low VOC paints

Generally, the film formation and pigment binding qualities of core/shell polymers are inferior to solvent coalesced systems and their use should be restricted to interior coatings or highly bound external paints such as gloss wood finishes and varnishes.
