Choice of Initiator

(i) Free Radical Generation

The most commonly used technique for generating free radicals is that of the thermal decomposition of a peroxide or azo compound. Another method frequently used where low temperature polymerisation is required is the generation of free radicals using oxidation-reduction couples (Redox systems).

Light sensitive, UV and IR initiators are commonly used in conjunction with radiation curable surface coatings, but they are outside the scope of this book.
