Density is determined by pyknometry at a standard temperature of 25°C. For standards, see Table 1.1 (“Density”). Apparatus: pyknometer, vacuum pump or centrifuge.
The apparent density of a powdered or granulated material after tamping is the mass (g) of 1 cm3 of the material after tamping in a tamping volumeter under prescribed conditions. The tamped volume is the volume (cm3) of 1 g of the material. Tamped volume and apparent density after tamping depend mainly on the true density, shape, and size of the particles. Knowledge of these parameters allows decisions to be made regarding dimensions of packing materials and product uniformity. For standards, see Table 1.1 (“Tamped volume”). Apparatus: tamping volumeter.
