Cationic dyes were used initially for dyeing of silk, leather, paper, and cotton mordanted with tannin, as well as for the production of ink and copying paper in the office supplies industry. Their high brilliance and color strength partly compensated for their poor lightfastness on these materials. With the development of synthetic fibers their most suitable substrates were found, and their importance for dyeing textiles increased greatly. Cationic dyes were employed initially for printing of cellulose acetate but gained much greater importance for dyeing of polyacrylonitrile, acid-modified polyester, and polyamide fibers.
