a-Naphthylamine (14.3 grams, 0.1 mole) is dissolved in 22 grams of 30 per cent hydrochloric acid and 100 cc. hot water, and the solution is cooled to 0°C. by the addition of 200 grams of ice. 60 grams of salt is then added, and when the temperature has dropped to about —5°, 20 grams of 20 per cent sulfuric acid is added, followed by rapid addition of 7 grams of sodium nitrite in the form of a 20 per cent solution. Diazotization is completed in a few minutes, the difficultly soluble sulfate of naphthylamine going into solution in the process. The final volume is about 800 cc. and the temperature is below 0°.
