The splicing of reinforcement bars using sleeved couplers offers a number of advantages. These include the avoidance of rebar congestion, positive stress transfer, reduced crack widths caused by bursting forces at lapped joints, and the ability to replace or add reinforcement in concrete repair work. Sleeve joints relying on epoxy resin only were investigated by Navaratnarajah(21), but more recently Ancon (МВТ) Couplers(22) have marketed a mechanical locking coupler whose fatigue performance may be enhanced by the injection of an epoxy resin. The coupler consists of a steel barrel in which there are various locking bolts and internally machined load transfer grooves. The positive mechanical key provides the necessary resistance to fire and creep which the resin cannot offer.
