Plastic bridges

Short span glass reinforced plastic (GRP) bridges have existed for some time in Europe and in the USA, but have carried only pedestrian traffic. In 1982, a 20 m span highway bridge was completed in Beijing, China(28). It comprises five honeycomb core box girders, each 21 m long, 1.6 m wide and 1.7 m deep, fabricated by the hand lay-up of layers of glassfibre cloth and polyester resin. The girders were then united to make a composite deck with further layers of glassfibre cloth and resin. The exposed surfaces of the bridge are coated with a resin coating to resist UV degradation. The largely experimental structure weighs only one fifth of that of an equivalent reinforced concrete counterpart, and demonstrates the potential savings on a longer span structure using GRP elements.
