The technique of bonding steel plate reinforcement to the tension and shear faces of existing reinforced concrete structures for strengthening purposes was described in Chapter 6. As an alternative to steel plate reinforcement, glass or carbon fibre reinforcement could be used which may (a) simplify some of the surface treatment procedures, (b) reduce installation costs because of the ease of handling and joining such materials, and (c) eliminate the costs associated with subsequent corrosion protection and maintenance of steel plates. Glass, carbon or mixtures of both fibres could be used and some preliminary evaluation work in the US has been reported(27). Development work has already been conducted on the selective stiffening and strengthening, or repair, of lightweight portable aluminium Bailey bridges used by the military. Strips and plates of fibre reinforced plastic were bonded to the surfaces where necessary using cold-curing adhesives.
