Connections between metals

Light-gauge materials

Adhesive joints between relatively thin gauge metals are common throughout the engineering industry. Such metals are used extensively in steel and aluminium curtain walling assemblies, and in proprietory steel framing systems. Cold-formed steel sections are also used extensively in building construction. The components of the walling and framing assemblies are commonly welded or brazed, but this can be detrimental; where coated metals are involved, it can be very difficult or impossible. There is an increasing trend towards the use of inorganically and organically coated metal products whose protection is lost during joining operations other than by adhesive bonding. The scope for the increasing use of adhesives in such applications is therefore very great.
