Much pioneering research work has been completed in the science and technology of adhesion and adhesives. A lot of that work has been directed to solving problems for technically demanding bonding applications, and the resultant understanding has enabled further development and technology transfer. Whilst the substrates to be bonded, the adhesives used, the operating conditions experienced and the rigour of control which can be exercised within the construction industry are often very different from those occurring in other industries, some useful insight and knowledge can be accumulated from examining the experience in other industries. Undoubtedly there is much to be gained which is applicable to off-site prefabrication of components, particularly for building construction applications. However the activities and applications in the various other industries that have been reviewed briefly in this Chapter serve to indicate current usage and R&D for technology transfer consideration into future civil engineering applications. The more widespread application of adhesives to bonding civil engineering structures remains both a matter of time and a matter of example. It must be concluded that further exploitation awaits a greater total documentation of design approaches for typical structural details, as well as the incorporation of design guidance in Codes of Practice.
