There exist a number of instances in which cladding panels, comprising various materials, are bonded directly into curtain

walling assemblies using toughened acrylics or structural silicones — predominantly under factory conditions rather than on site. In some cases the design may accommodate a degree of additional mechanical restraint, particularly if required by local building regulations. Nevertheless there remain several opportunities for using adhesives in cladding, particularly with heavily filled polyester sheet panel materials. Adhesives can be used for ‘secret fix’ applications to bond stiffeners to the reverse of panels, or to bond fixing attachments to them, or to bond them directly into frames. Apart from eliminating visible external fixings and problems of ‘read through’ on thin or opaque panels, the assembly process is made simpler and more economic.
