In mechanical engineering and process equipment construction, welding and joining by screws are still the first-choice joining techniques. Adhesive bonding is suitable for small series production because only minor equipment is required for this technique. Fast-setting adhesives that can be applied without costly devices (such as autoclaves and/or mixing and metering units) are preferred. The prerequisites for reliable adhesive bonds are a correct design which meets the demands of bonding, a reliable surface preparation of the adherents, and an extensive knowledge of the long­term behavior of adhesive bonds.
