Grinding

As the adhesion properties of surfaces after grinding with abrasives are poorer than those of blasted surfaces, it is recommended that the adherents should be ground at right-angles to the loading direction, or crosswise. Before grinding, the surfaces must be carefully degreased since, if the contaminations are not removed they will be distributed uniformly over the entire surface and no improvement in bond quality will be achieved. Typically, belt sanders, angle grinders and random orbital grinders are used for this type of surface preparation method. Although the localized energy concentrations during grinding are lower than during blasting, it is still possible that the components of the binding material of the abrasive grains may be transferred to the adherent surface. However, such contaminants have been shown as nondetrimental in a variety of tests as they adhere firmly to the surface.
