Cigarette Production

One special application of adhesives in the use of paper is the production of cigarettes. At present, cigarette rods are manufactured at a line speed of up to 750 m min-1, during which the cigarette papers are side-seam-bonded using dispersion adhesives and starch-based adhesives are applied by means of discs or nozzles.

One particularly high-demanding application is the bonding of filter tips. To this end, two cigarettes are bonded at a time to a filter rod by means of a paper wrapper. High line speeds allow the bonding ofup to 22 000 cigarettes per minute. To adapt the adhesives to ever-increasing production speeds, rheology is a key factor. For example, the rheological parameters ofstarch-based adhesives can be optimized by enzymatic degradation that modifies their molecular weight. This makes it possible to develop adhesives with a higher solids content, which allows faster setting rate and thus provides for higher production speeds.

Cigarettes are packed either in hardboxes or soft packs. Owing to their high initial adhesion, dextrin adhesives are used for the manufacture of soft packs from cuts that are produced at a rate of 1000 packs per minute. Due to high wet bonding capacity, they are able to overcome the restoring forces prevailing during the bonding process. Hardboxes are usually bonded by means of dispersion adhesives.
