Casing-In

In soft-back production, books are directly cased-in in the unsewn binding machine, whereas in hard-back production a special machine performs this task. First, the book blocks are compiled via unsewn binding or thread sewing. The endsheets are then bonded to the book block, mainly by means of polyvinyl acetate-based dispersion adhesives. The outer surfaces of the book block are then coated with dispersion adhesives (usually plasticized polyvinyl acetate-based dispersions) and then cased-in by introducing the book block into the cover. It is then pressed in a finishing press that establishes a close contact between the endsheets and the cover. For book covers provided with a hollow, the casing-in machine has a cushion gluing system which is designed to bond the hollow to the back of the book block. Dispersion or hot-melt

adhesives are applied to the hollow via a nozzle gluing system prior to joining it with the inlay of the book block.
