Atmospheric Plasma Treatment

The plasma generator consists of a ceramic tube surrounded by an electric conductor made from sealed metal powder. In the center, an electrically conductive rod with good thermal conductivity (inner electrode) acts as a counter-electrode. An ionizable gas (e. g. air, oxygen) is introduced into the ionization gap between the inner wall of the ceramic tube and the inner electrode, and a high-frequency, high-voltage field is applied to the electrodes. The gas that passes through the gap is ionized by the alternating electrical field and then escapes at the end of the nozzle.

Atmospheric plasma pretreatment provides significant improvement to the adhesion properties of many polymers, and is easy to handle. It has also been successfully used for the pretreatment of metal parts if only a small degree of superficial contamination is to be removed.
