Modifying Resins

A large number of resins can be used to modify the properties of the two pack acrylic system. The most common are high viscosity hard resins with good colour and colour retention, which are added to achieve quicker initial drying and earlier handleability of the coated object. Those frequently used are:

• cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB)

• nitrocellulose

• PVC copolymers

These hard resins accelerate physical drying rather than chemical interaction. Their addition also has the effect of reducing solids and resistance characteristics of the coating.

Cellulose acetate butyrate is also used at low levels of modification to enhance the flow characteristics of the coating.

As stated earlier, a large range of prepolymers is also available as reactive diluents to reduce VOC. (See Table 5-2).
