The polymerisation is a bulk process which is a very reactive and strongly exothermic process, thus a special reactor with efficient cooling is required. Solvent is not available to control the reaction by refluxing and thereby removing the heat of reaction. The monomers are converted to a viscous gel which is extruded through a nozzle at the base of the reactor onto a cooled, moving belt. The resultant cast film is disintegrated to flakes. These flakes are subsequently dissolved in aqueous alkali.

The polymerisation process follows a procedure very similar to the conventional emulsion process described earlier.
