Adhesives have always been a decisive factor in the manufacture of packaging materials made from paper, board or cardboard, or even from plastics or other materials. At the start of the 20th century, paper — a natural product — was bonded with adhesives based on natural raw materials such as proteins, starch or cellulose (see Section 5.9). Today, a wide variety of different materials is used in the packaging industry, and the many requirements can be met only by synthetic adhesives.
