Associative acrylic thickeners are also known as hydrophobically modified alkali-swellable emulsions (HASE). Chemically, they are copolymers composed of three blocks:
• Hydrophilic monomers such as acrylic acid, methacrylic acid or maleic anhydride
• Hydrophobic monomers such as butyl acrylates or methyl methacrylates
• Associative monomers with long alkyl chains such as alkyl vinyl ethers.
Like alkali-swellable emulsion thickeners, they are supplied as emulsions and are only active in a narrow pH range of 8 to 10, outside of which their viscosity decreases.
