License plates, which were conceived with the birth of the automobile, began as simple color-painted plates but have rapidly evolved into high-tech car identifi­cation labels. One landmark in this development was the replacement of color painting by self-adhesive reflective sheeting (binding since 1989). Later, in 1995, European vehicle registration plate graphics were introduced (binding in Germany since 2000).
